Millions of people are on the brink of starvation in the Horn of Africa due to recent severe droughts coupled with the effects of past and ongoing conflicts, FAO said in a special alert today. In Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti and Ethiopia more than 11 million people are estimated to be in need of assistance.

An estimated 11 million people in the Horn of Africa "are on the brink of starvation" because of severe drought and war, with some deaths already being reported in Kenya, the United Nations said Friday.

Millions on the brink of starvation in Horn of Africa, says UN
Six million people are on the brink of starvation in the Horn of Africa region due to severe drought, crop failure and depletion of livestock herds, the United Nations said on Friday. The U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said about 2 million people needed urgent humanitarian help in Somalia, 1.5 million in Ethiopia, and 2.5 million in Kenya.
